I. PROFILE

The Japan Advertising Federation (JAF), an incorporated association, is Japan's only tripartite advertising organization, the members of which are advertisers, advertising agencies, and media.

Founded in 1947 (shortly after the end of World War II), JAF is considered synonymous with the history of Japan's advertising industry. JAF consists of 36 regional advertising associations located across the nation.

JAF's nationwide membership reaches some 5,215 corporate members and 7,779 individuals.

What are the most distinguished characteristics of JAF? JAF has been and still is exerting its utmost efforts in carrying out a wide range of activities in the interests of Japan's adverting and media-related industries at the head of many other organizations.


II. JAF'S ACTIVITIES

1. Activities in support of the advertising and media industries in Japan

1) As a leader of advertising as well as media-related circles, JAF campaigns continuously against legislative taxation on advertising.

2) JAF continuously pushes for correction and rectification of negative advertising-related content in social science text books used in junior as well as senior high school.

3) JAF exerts strenuous efforts to erase misunderstanding of and discrimination against advertising in the public mind.

4) JAF is an active defender of the advertising industry against possible regulation and pressure to enact laws in relation to advertising.


2. Other major activities

1) JAF annual congress

Under the common congress theme nationwide, the JAF annual convention is held each year. Sponsored by JAF and supported by the JAF's regional member association, more than 1,000 delegates attend the event from 36 member associations across the nation. They exchange views, adopt new policies and confirm the solidarity of the nationwide organizations. Also attending are representative from other important advertising and media related organizations.

2) Annual Summer Advertising Colleges (Seminars)

JAF sponsors the JAF Summer Advertising Colleges (Seminars) every year in 5-6 cities. JAF selects the theme and lectures and dispatches them to regional JAF member associations.

This annual event is a part of JAF's activities to enhance the public's understanding of advertising.

3) International activities

JAF has actively been carrying out tasks and duties to achieve the aim of the advertising industry worldwide and of the Asia-Pacific regions in partcular.

The Japan Advertising Federation is the AFAA(Asian Federation of Advertising Associations) representative in Japan. The first Asian Advertising congress (AdAsia) was held in Tokyo in 1958. Two years later, a second congress was held again in Tokyo. Thereafter AdAsia has been held every two years in various countries throughout Asia and Pacific.

AdFest is also represnted by JAF in Japan accordingly.

JAF has maintained a close relationship with the IAA (International Advertising Association). The IAA and JAF are cooperating with each other in achieving the aim and goal of their objectives in various ways.


III. Issuance of publications

Gekkan Zenkoren
JAF's monthly publication carries the lateset information on the activities of JAFF and its member associations. The 15,000 copies published each month are distributed to the 36 member associations, other related organizations, and public libraries, etc.

Advertising Law and Regulation News
JAF constantly monitors the enforcement of new advertising-related laws and requlation. Advertising Law & Regulation News is released to members most months. JAF's Advertising Law Manual is published annually.
