  I. Introduction

The 4As represents agencies, suppliers and practitioners in this vibrant centre of creativity in Asia. Founded in 1948, the 4As has fostered the growth of communication services in Singapore surpassing S$1 billion dollars media spending p.a. since 1995.

Today, the 4As has a membership of 80, represented by at least 22 of the world's major international agencies and an impressive list of over 50 local advertising agencies.

Singaporeans hold major positions in the industry in both management and creative departments of international as well as local advertising agencies. Some of our top local advertising agencies have recently gone regional and worldwide.

In 1997, special services were extended to suppliers and practitioners through new membership classes.

To broaden its representation both in the number and type of agencies operating in Singapore, the Association enlarged its Constitution in December 1999 to include agencies/operators from all facets of the marketing communication industry.

II. Events

Below are the events/activities conducted by the 4As for the year 2000/2001

1. CCA 2000 CREATIVE SEMINAR

This creative seminar, which was organized in conjunction with CCA 2000 was held on Friday, 6th October 2000, at RELC Auditorium with a record of about 320 attendees. The International judges invited for the CCA Judging, who were also well-known creative personalities, were gracious enough to share their experiences and expertise with students and young practitioners. They were Mr. Michael Mazza of Hal Riney & Partners, San Francisco; Mr. Mikal Reich of Mad Dogs & Englishmen, New York; Mr. Clive Pickering of BMP DDB, London; Mr. Linus Karlsson and Mr. Paul Malmstrom of Fallon Minneapolis.

2. CREDIT RISK MANAGEMENT SEMINAR

This is the first in a series of Credit Risk Management Seminars presented by Credinet Singapore. This 2-day seminar held on 7th - 8th March 2000 at Hotel Inter-Continental Singapore Ballroom 3, was conducted by Mr. George Goh (Membership Chairman of The Singapore Association of Credit Management, Membership Services). The seminar's main aim was to assist credit and financial managers identify potential debtors, take precautionary measures, implement effective credit policies, conduct accurate credit evaluation and risk analysis as well as reduce exposure. A special 15% discount was given to 4As' members.

3. SCREENING OF THE 41ST CLIO AWARDS

This annual screening of Clio's winning showreel of TV ads, jointly organised by 4As and TCS, was held on Tuesday, 21st November 2000, at TCS TV Theatre, Caldecott Broadcast Centre. The screening was followed by a reception, kindly hosted by TCS. More than 500 attended the screening.

4. 4As GET-TOGETHER NIGHT

This poolside gathering was organised for the first time specially for 4As' members and friends in the marketing communications industry. It was held on Friday, 23rd February 2001, at The Elizabeth Hotel with an attendance of about 100.

It presented a great opportunity for 4As members and guests to meet and share views on important issues concerning the advertising and marketing communications scene in Singapore. The event was made possible through the kind sponsorship of Adoi Singapore and MediaBanc. The plan is to hold this on a quarterly basis with sponsors' support.

5. CREATIVE CIRCLE AWARDS

The overall creative standard in the local ad industry continue to be high as evident from the many reports in the local and regional dailies and trade press highlighting the exploits and success of both local creative shops and multi-national agencies.

As in the past, the main project of this committee is the annual award show, CCA, This year there was a difference in the judging process. There was only one-tier of judging panel (5 local and 5 international judges) including 3 specialist judges who judged both the 1st and 2nd round of judging. Another difference was that the entire interactive judging by international judges was done online (from the website created by John Lambie). The website also allowed entries (for interactive only) to be submitted online.

6. STUDENTS CREATIVE AWARDS 2001

4As launched the 1st ever Student Creative Awards (SCA), an event which is the first of its kind in Singapore that would help to launch and introduce young talents to the advertising and media industry.

It is hoped that members of the industry would be enthusiastic of the idea of having a students creative awards event to tap, expose and recognise the young vibrant talents of tomorrow.

Each award winner was given a certificate, presented at the awards night. The top two student winners (for Best of Show) would be going for internships with Fallon, Minneapolis, a top international advertising agency in the U.S. 4As also hope to get other local internship programs for the other winners in agencies and organizations.

IIIV. Additional Associations

1. ASSOCIATION OF BROADCASTERS (SINGAPORE) - ABS

Background

Since 1994, the broadcasting industry in Singapore has undergone several significant changes. The then-national broadcaster, Singapore Broadcasting Corporation was corporatised and a new authority responsible for regulatory and licensing functions, the Singapore Broadcasting Authority (SBA), was set up.

These changes were introduced with the objective of developing Singapore into a broadcasting hub in the region and encouraging more overseas broadcasters to establish their presence in Singapore. It is understood that since 1995, more than 15 new broadcasters have applied for broadcasting licenses from the SBA. Currently, there are 9 free-to-air local broadcasters and 17 satellite broadcasters that uplink from Singapore.

Such rapid growth in the industry, coupled with the influx of international broadcast media players in recent years, have been the catalyst for the formation of a new association of broadcasters in Singapore, called the Association of Broadcasters (Singapore) - ABS.

Objectives

The objectives of ABS include acting on matters of common interest to members relating to broadcasting, as well as representing them in communications with other public and private-sector organizations and the community at large. In addition, ABS serves as an information center for its members.

Future Plans

For the immediate future, ABS looks forward to participating in and sponsoring next year's prestigious broadcasting event, BroadcastAsia' 2002. This important industry exhibition, which showcases the latest in broadcasting equipment, technologies and techniques, is expected to draw thousands of visitors from around the region. In the longer term, ABS hopes to set the ethical standards for the broadcasting industry in Singapore. Meanwhile, it is cultivating useful co-operation with associations of related industries, e.g. advertising, in Singapore; as well as with counterpart associations in Malaysia and the region.

ABS is constantly recruiting new corporate and associate members to join the Association. With the entry of more players into Singapore's broadcasting sector and the rapid technological advancements, which result in an expanded range of new opportunities which the broadcasters can tap, policy issues and operational matters facing the broadcasters will also become increasingly complex. ABS warmly welcomes fellow broadcasters to join us in discussing and addressing these issues together. The ABS Secretariat can be contacted at the following address:
